What is solid fuel?
Not only is solid fuel environmentally friendly, it's also extremely cost-effective. There are a variety of solid materials that can be burnt to release energy and provide heat and light. This process is known as combustion. Common examples of solid fuels are wood, charcoal, corn and wheat.
Fuelling your home is more efficient and eco-friendly with solid fuels. You don't need to rely on energy suppliers or worry about having power cuts or failures in the energy supplies.
Solid Fuel Rayburns
Are you deciding between an oven with low-running costs and an oven that's efficient and economical? Well, with a Solid Fuel Rayburn, you can have both!
As well as giving you a sensational cooking experience, they can also heat your home! In fact, they have the capability of controlling your central heating, ranging from 2 to up to 20 radiators, depending on the model.
Solid Fuel Rayburns models are fuelled with natural, carbon-neutral wood, manufactured smokeless fuel, compressed heat logs or peat briquettes.
Rayburn Solid Fuel and wood-fired cookers offer excellent performance and flexibility, using a combination of air intakes, dampers and levers.
These cookers should be installed by a HETAS engineer, which is a national organisation ensuring the safe, efficient and environmentally friendly use of solid fuels.
Rayburn Heatranger 355 SFW
With these handy cookers, you have the choice of central heating, domestic hot water and cooking. It has the largest of its range, being a similar size to the 200 series; therefore, it's more appropriate if you have larger heating requirements. It also has a summer setting to reduce the boiler output.
Frequently asked questions
Do Rayburns have to remain on at all times?
This depends on the model. The older models do remain on, but can be adjusted when you require more or less heat, whereas the Rapid Response models can be switched on and off as needed, and can heat up fast, so you don't have to worry about being in a cold home for too long.
What happens during power cuts?
During a power cut, Solid Fuel models will go into safe mode. You can still cook, and they will still provide hot water. The cookers will automatically restart when the electricity supply is restored.
Tips for wood burning
You may think wood-burning causes harm to the environment and the trees when actually, it's carbon neutral. This means that it releases the same amount of carbon dioxide as it would if it were naturally decomposing.
When you're burning wood, you must ensure the logs are really dry, as burning damp logs could result in corrosion and furthermore create a chimney fire due to damage of the flue. Naturally, logs found on the forest floor contain between 65-90% of water.
If you want to dry the logs yourself, you can purchase green logs; otherwise the most convenient would be Kiln-dried, which are pre-dried at a hot temperature, or seasoned logs which have been left to dry naturally.
When you have purchased your logs, it's a good idea to store them undercover to prevent them from getting wet.
